Right after the government announced the date for local level election, the SLMM on Monday announced its stir programmes. As part of its protest programme, the Morcha cadres organised a torch rally today—on the eve of Madhes Banda slated for Wednesday.
The torch rally began from Shiva Temple in Rajbiraj, marched around the city before concluding at Neta Chok. The participants chanted slogans against the government and warned that they would not let any elections to convene if their demands were not met.
Various Madhes-centric parties have been pressing for endorsement of constitution amendment bill registered at the Legislatrue-Parliament before the commencement of the elections in the country.
Likewise, demonstrations have been held in Tarai’s Bara, Parsa and Rautahat districts. In Birjung and Kalaiya, cadres of Madhes-based parties burnt tyres expressing discontent that it is irresponsible to conduct elections before the constitution amendment.
“Elections have no relevance before the amendment. Madhes is being provoked for conflict by announcing the election dates,” said Sanghiya Samajwadi Forum Nepal’s Kalaiya Municipal Chairman Binod Barai. “Elections are necessary but after the amendment,” he added.
